This is the first post in a five-part series by St. Louis AutoCAD Users Group that explores AutoCAD and offers insights for both new and seasoned users. We’ll be covering topics including learning the program, the basics of drawing and geometry, and the best practices of using AutoCAD.

Drawing on a Tablet

Since the release of AutoCAD in 1982, Autodesk has made numerous enhancements to the program. These changes include the ability to draw on a tablet, a type of touchscreen that allows users to draw freehand without a mouse or drawing pad. This is how I started to use AutoCAD: my first task was to draw on a tablet. (Editor’s note: I used Autodesk Inventor to draw the schematic of a TVC-SRL cable tester and created the attached file drawing.)

The first thing you should know about drawing on a tablet is that there is no line-by-line control. In other words, to draw a line on a tablet, you don’t click once to begin drawing, then click again to end the line. Rather, you touch anywhere on the screen and release the tablet, and the line is drawn. The point of creating AutoCAD on a tablet is to allow users to draw with their fingers without using a mouse. I found that it’s quite difficult to draw on a tablet with a mouse (which requires a hand and a pad), but it works great with the pen.

Before you draw, you can select objects (lines, arrows, text, etc.) by clicking on them. Then you can draw freehand by drawing on the screen using your finger, or you can select a drawing tool by using the mouse or by clicking on one of the tool icons that appears on the tablet screen.

The feature that immediately gets the most attention from a newcomer to AutoCAD is the ability to select objects and create lines by simply touching the object you want to select with your finger. In AutoCAD 2011, you can actually press and hold on an object, and the object will “grab” on to your finger, even though there is nothing else touching your finger. I found this to be a real life saver in AutoCAD.

AutoCAD makes it easy to place and align objects. You can move objects with the arrow keys or with the mouse, but it’s easier to use the arrow keys or the mouse to align

DXF Dumper converts the graphical format, developed by the DWG Group, to format suitable for use with modern word processing packages. The format is similar to Microsoft Office’s native format for graphical documents, except that it supports all drawing elements and is not restricted to two-dimensional drawings. AutoCAD can convert files to DXF format using the DXF Export command in the Drawing Management toolbar.

The polymeric systems of the first class have essentially controlled the drug release profile of the therapeutic agent by the use of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, which are either slowly degraded in the body or which break down in such a way that the therapeutic agent is gradually released.
Biodegradable polymers which have been used as the carrier for therapeutic agents in controlled release systems include polylactic and polyglycolic acids, polyamino acids such as polypeptides, polyesters of hydroxycarboxylic acids, polyanhydrides, polyorthoesters and polyphosphazenes. Although such polymers are generally suitable for use in controlled release systems for therapeutic agents, they often exhibit unsatisfactory or variable drug release profiles which make the use of these polymers in the design of controlled release systems impractical.
Controlled release polymers of the non-biodegradable or the second class (i.e. polymers which are not degraded in the body and which are not biocompatible) include, for example, cellulose derivatives such as ethyl cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and hydroxyethyl cellulose, waxes such as paraffin wax and polyethylene glycol wax, fatty acids, acrylic acid polymers, and polyacrylates.
The non-biodegradable polymeric materials tend to form a rather thick coating on the surface of the administered therapeutic agent. This leads to a reduction in the oral absorption of the drug from the intestinal tract. While the non-biodegradable poly
