The purpose of the study was to examine the clinical outcomes of a tape-based treatment program for acute lateral epicondylitis of the elbow. The effectiveness of treatment was evaluated by comparing results before and after treatment. A secondary purpose was to examine the various factors that may influence clinical outcomes. Subjects with a clinical diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis of the elbow were recruited from an out-patient clinic in Hong Kong. The treatment program included a series of tape applications to the elbow in association with exercises. A wide range of patients with no previous history of treatment and no recurrence after the initial episode of lateral epicondylitis were recruited. The range of motion, the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were assessed pre- and post-treatment. The outcome was defined by comparing changes in the VAS and the DASH scores between pre- and post-treatment. The score change was compared between groups based on age, history, cause, level of activity, nature of employment and location of the affected side. Thirty-three subjects (25 males, 8 females, mean age 36.3 years, range 25-59 years) were recruited for the study. The mean pain and VAS scores reduced significantly after treatment from 6.3 to 1.3 (P=0.000) and from 6.8 to 1.6 (P=0.000), respectively. The DASH score (a score of 65 representing normal elbow function) was in the normal range before treatment and increased after treatment, but remained within the normal range. The overall score increase was significantly correlated with duration of the episode (P=0.014) and also with the nature of employment (P=0.036). The use of a tape-based treatment program significantly improved functional ability in subjects who had lateral epicondylitis of the elbow. We
